Each summer a 10 day pageant of colour and vibrancy happens to celebrate Buddha based at this temple, where you will find his last surviving remains – a tooth. Wednesdays are busy due to sacred bathing, but if you can stand the crowds it’s definitely an experience worth sticking around for.
Although Kandy is no longer Sri Lanka’s capital, many consider it to be so when it comes to experiencing the county’s culture, which flows through every aspect of local life. Take time to wander the area and see the street performances, bazaars, cafes and restaurants; great for chilling out on a hot day. The people are so welcoming that you’ll soon feel right at home here. But don’t just sit around all day drinking tea with the locals; go see how it’s made at the nearby plantation and you’ll appreciate the beauty of your brew all the more. There is also plenty of wildlife to see should you seek it; a trip to the Elephant Orphanage is a great day out, especially for the little Peppa Pigs.
When it comes to nightlife, Kandy isn’t the sort of place you’d find a lot of the boozy club culture; however you will find some laid back lounge bars where you can enjoy a few drinks and meet new people. There are a few discos in the city, but an evening of eating, drinking and wandering the craft shops is the way to see Kandy at its most beautiful and charming.
