World class snow and family fun
La Molina ski resort is perched in the Spanish Pyrenees. It’s the oldest resort in Spain and this impressive pedigree shows. It’s known to be a friendly resort, which is just what lastminute.com likes to hear, and has very easy links from Barcelona. A specific train goes straight from Barcelona City centre and drops you off at a shuttle bus after a 3 and a half hour journey. The area is known to be good for beginners and intermediate skiers, so family holidays are a great option.
Spain’s first ski resort should be your first choice
You’ll want to take your holiday in La Molina during the high season, which typically runs from December to April, with a healthy snowfall throughout. The resort is set at 1700m but the lifts go up to an elevation of 2445m. The first ski lift was installed on this resort in 1943, with Spain’s first ski school a year later. Luckily they’ve expanded since then and there are 16 lifts altogether, including gondolas, chairlifts, surface lifts and magic carpets. The 46 pistes cater for every experience level, with Pista Llara, Els Pins and Fontcanaleta being great green slopes. Further up you have every kind of piste from blue to black. While the weekends can get busy due to an influx of weekend skiers from Barcelona, the 53km of skiing area mean there is ample space to play.
La Molina connects with the neighbouring Masella resort, which opens up more opportunities for adventure. Don’t think that skiing is the only activity on offer either: dog sledging with a team of huskies will go down a treat with the kids. Stomping around in snowshoes on a hike as you explore the beautiful mountains or slipping around in the dedicated sledging area will be fun for the whole family. For snowboarders there’s a dedicated area with ramps, jumps and half pipes, as well as three kilometres of cross-country trailers through the forests, which are open to skiers as well. As a special treat you could even hire a hot air balloon or light aircraft to view the gorgeous Pyrenees from above. The unique views will be absolutely unforgettable.
The nightlife is more relaxed at La Molina, with alpine bars being the traditional hang out spot. The next door resort of Masella is a lot busier though, and will give you a more exciting evening out.
