Step back in time on a holiday to Es Castell

.The narrow streets of Es Castell are lined with Georgian townhouses - not what you would expect from a resort on the coast of Menorca. Yet the town of Es Castell close to Menorca’s capital Mahon, stems from Georgian times when it was purpose built as a military town. Today its Georgian and military history can be seen in its architecture, and it remains an attractive and interesting town. Its location on Menorca’s east coast makes it an ideal base for exploring the idyllic beaches at other Menorca resorts

A taste of real Menorca whilst on holiday in Es Castell

Lose yourself in Es Castell’s narrow streets, stroll along the promenade and be charmed by the Georgian architecture. The fishing harbour of Cales Fonts is flavoured with a genuine [Spanish holiday](http://holidays.lastminute.com/spain-holidays.htm) atmosphere and both tourists and locals alike enjoy the restaurants and bars on the waterside. If you’re lucky enough to be in the town on the 24th and 25th July then celebrate in typical Spanish style at the annual Es Castell Fiesta with live music, food, fireworks and a magnificent horse parade through the harbour.

Although Es Castell doesn’t have a beach of its own, the resort of Punta Prima, only ten minutes away, is a stunning beach with shallow turquoise water. The picturesque and quiet beaches of Cala Prudent and Cala Cavallena are within driving distance of the town. Es Castell is close to the holiday destination S’Algar, and is the place to go to try an array of water sports. It’s particularly popular with divers as it has a respected dive centre there and, if you’re up for it, you can even go cave diving.

When you’ve had enough sea air head inland to the picturesque village of Torret with its traditional white washed Menorcan houses and fabulous restaurants Sa Pedrera des Pujol and Pan y Vino.

Mahon is located just north of Es Castell and can be walked to in just over 30 minutes. Enjoy an evening out at one of the bars or restaurants on the harbour side. Spend a day exploring the city and learn about its fascinating past through its historic buildings and museums. Mahon is a great place to find souvenirs in the many independent shops and boutiques hidden down narrow side streets.
