A melting pot of influences
The town of Algeciras never quite gets the recognition that it deserves. Used by most as a connection port for getting to Morocco, many visitors rarely spend more than a few hours in the town. It’s a shame because if you look a bit harder, past its industrial appearance, and explore a bit further this charming place has a lot more on offer than initially meets the eye. The town has a fabulous Moroccan influence that fits perfectly side-by-side with its Spanish nature and atmosphere, many of the signposts you’ll see are written in both Spanish and Arabic.
Accommodation fit for royalty
Algeciras is pretty proud of some of its celebrity residents. The Hotel Reina Cristina has provided a bed for kings and queens throughout history as well as statesmen such as Roosevelt and Churchill. The town is full of amazing restaurants that send delicious aromas out into the streets. Make sure you grab a window seat and admire the views of ‘the Rock’, an unusual landmark found out at sea. Restaurant owners are keen to see you trying all of their local delicacies. The seafood is phenomenal; straight from the water into your paella. Wash it all down with some southern Spanish wine and watch the port wind down after a busy working day.
When on holiday in Algeciras it’s easy to take a day trip a bit further afield. San Roque, Ronda and Castellar de la Frontera are all just short journeys on the train and open up the opportunity to see even more of the beautiful region of Costa del Sol. The town is also an important port for travelling to North Africa. Ferries run regularly between Algericas and Morocco so, if you have a day or two to spare, take the trip and visit two continents in one holiday!
