Get away to Cabo de Gata

Want to see pink flamingos on your holiday to Spain? You can at the Cabo de Gata Natural Park on the Costa de Almeria. Cabo de Gata is no ordinary holiday to the Spanish Costas. Yes it enjoys 18C plus temperatures all year round and shares the same Mediterranean coastline as Malaga to the west and Alicante in the east but it couldn’t be more different.

The Cabo de Gata Natural Park was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1997 and is a protected area of stunning natural beauty. Its scenery ranges from a wild and rugged mountain range, to wetlands and salt flats and isolated beaches begging to be explored. If you want to experience a true Spanish holiday to one of the last remaining wild coastlines in Spain, then Cabo de Gata is the place to go.

Back to nature with a holiday to Cabo de Gata

With breathtaking scenery of sand dunes, saltwater lagoons, semi-desert, mountains and beaches, Cabo de Gata is an ideal place for nature lovers and makes an incredible beach holiday. There are some fine beaches near the coastal village of San José. Enjoy the isolation of Playas de los Muertos and the unusual black sand of Monsul Beach, which featured in Steven Spielburg’s ‘Indiana Jones’. Nearby Los Genoveses Beach was used in the 1962 film ‘Lawrence of Arabia’.

The visitor’s centre at Los Amoladeras is a good place to start exploring the reserve. Explore the coastline on foot and walk to Cabo de Gata beach and, with luck, spot the pink flamingos and the other migrating birds like storks and cranes on the salt flats. With over 20 marked paths through the reserve, you could spend days walking or cycling and never be bored of the ever changing scenery.

Coral reefs litter the Cabo de Gata coastline making it an ideal spot to snorkel or dive. And if you don’t want to see another person all day, take a boat to Cala Rajá or Cala Higuera, two of the many inaccessible coves dotted along this stretch of coast and soak up the sun in desolate and unspoilt surroundings.

After a day spent getting back to nature, head to the peaceful fishing villages of La Isleta or San José and find a fish tavern by the sea. For a great visit it’s well worth checking out other Almeria holidays, which offer a great combination of culture and exotic nightlife. If you prefer something more coastal, check out Mojacar holidays, which offers fantastic scenery and surroundings.
