Living it up Costa Brava style in Tossa de Mar

Follow in the footsteps of Hollywood icon Ava Gardner, and book a holiday to Tossa de Mar on the sunshine cost of the Costa Brava. The actress filmed ‘Pandora and the Flying Dutchman’ in the town in 1950 and the stunning location has been drawing in the crowds ever since.

With a name like Tossa you’d be forgiven for thinking that the town would be dominated by boozed up Brits. And although it’s fair to say that some areas of the Costa Brava have suffered from mass tourism, there’s a lot more to this stretch of rugged and spectacular coastline than neon signs and fish and chips. A holiday to the medieval town of Tossa de Mar offers beaches aplenty, picture postcard surroundings and, if you’re up for it, a taste of Spanish nightlife.

What to do in Tossa de Mar

Take a guided walk around Tossa de Mar and discover Vila Vella, the old medieval part of the town. Explore the cobbled alleyways, whitewashed buildings and quaint squares within its medieval walls and admire the ruins of the gothic church. Escape the heat and dive into the Placa Roig i Soler and discover the towns past in the remains of mosaics and artefacts from the nearby Roman Villa.

Undoubtedly the Costa Brava is all about sunshine and beaches, and holidays to Tossa de Mar are no exception. The town has four beaches for you to soak up the sun on. Platja de la Mar Menuda, set away from the old town is considered to be the best beach. If you don’t mind crowds then there’s the central Platja Gran. Take a boat trip to discover the coastline and the coves ether side of Tossa de Mar, hiding the towns other two beaches.

A holiday to Tossa de Mar is quieter and more laid back than a holiday to Lloret de Mar, its touristy neighbour. It’s worth a trip to Lloret de Mar to experience the hustle and bustle, the shopping and gaudy nightlife of the town, before escaping back to the calming influence of Tossa de Mar. You’d better like seafood if you visit Tossa de Mar. Its Costa Brava location means there’s an abundance of fish and seafood. The restaurant, Can Siso, which serves Spanish and Catalan dishes, is located in Vila Vella’s picturesque old square, while Castell Vell, also in the old town, has stunning views over the bay. Finish off the evening with a jug of sangria at Bar Vila Vella or dance the night away to live Flamenco music at Don Pepe.
