Discover the capital of Sardinia

Cagliari is the capital city of Sardinia, and lies on the scenic southern coast of the island. This bustling city features a blend of ancient culture, modern attractions, and natural surroundings of breathtaking beauty. You’ll find it’s equally suited to cultural breaks, honeymoons and family holidays.

Castle town

Cagliari’s name comes from the Sardinian word Casteddu, meaning ‘Castle’. The city has long been a place of great importance and over the centuries it has seen numerous civilizations come and go. In the early 14th century this was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia, and you’ll be able to uncover many remnants of the city’s past as you explore this fascinating destination.

Cagliari is renowned for its striking Art Nouveau architectural style, as well as an unusually high number of parks and open spaces. In fact, it has been declared as Italy’s ‘greenest’ city. Perhaps the most famous of these parks is the ‘Regional Park of Molentargius’, a vast, scenic area that boasts a wide variety of flora and fauna. Some of the city’s other parks include the Monte Claro Park, the Park of San Michele Hill, and the beautiful Public Gardens. You’ll find plenty of beautiful spots for a picnic or a stroll, during a holiday to Cagliari.

There are a number of smaller towns and villages that you can visit during a holiday in Cagliari, providing some great options for a day trip or excursion. Some examples include the towns of Elmas, Assemini and Monserrato. At these destinations you’ll be able to discover a different pace of life altogether, from that found in the island’s capital. Enjoy a lazy day wandering the narrow streets of these rural townships, or stop off for refreshments or dinner at any of their numerous traditional bars and restaurants. Alternatively, visit the nearby mountain park at Monte Arcosu to explore vast forests that provide a home to Sardinian deer and wild boars.
