Alghero Holidays

If you’re looking for a cultural day out during your holiday to Alghero, then you’ll be spoilt for choice! A great place to start is at the Alghero Cathedral. This beautiful, 16th century building features the traditional style of Catalan-Gothic architecture, combined with a range of later additions; the nave and two aisles were added in the 17th century and feature a Late Renaissance style, while the 20th century narthex appears Neo-Classical in comparison. The 14th century Church of St. Francis and the breathtaking Church of St. Michael are also must-see sights on any holiday to Alghero.

The beach at Alghero is just a short walk away from the town’s historic district. Here you’ll be able to enjoy the fine white sands for which the area is so famous, and the area offers some great opportunities for swimming, sunbathing and beach games. You will also be able to find a great range of bars and restaurants around the seafront, and spreading into the main street. No holiday to Alghero would be complete, without stopping to try some of the fantastic local cuisine!

The area to the northwest of Alghero is renowned as an area of great natural beauty. Encompassing the towns of Porto Conte, Punta Giglio and Capo Caccia, this region has long been the interest of biologists and geologists alike; as well as being a very popular spot for outdoor sports! A few of the many activities you can try here include scuba diving, caving, hiking and rock climbing. Cave diving is a particularly popular pastime on a holiday to Alghero, as there are more than three hundred distinct caves along this stretch of coastline – some above water, and others submerged. Perhaps the most famous of Alghero’s caves is the one known as Neptune’s Grotto. This impressive marine cave is generally considered to be the largest and most spectacular of its kind, anywhere in Europe – and it’s certainly the most popular amongst scuba divers.
