A calm and relaxing holiday

Sardinia is a region of Italy, and represents the second largest island in the Mediterranean. Holidays to Sardinia are perfect for anyone looking to avoid the noisy, crowded resorts that you find at many Mediterranean destinations, and the island boasts a rich culture and laidback atmosphere.

A cultural escape

You’ll find there’s plenty to see and do during a holiday to Sardinia, ranging from ancient ruins to lively modern culture. For many people the beaches will be the main attraction on a holiday in Sardinia – the island boasts some truly superb stretches of coastline, combining fine, white sand with crystal clear waters.

Water sports are particularly popular on the island of Sardinia, and one of the hotspots is around the bay known as Porto Pollo. Here you’ll find an abundance of windsurfers, as well as a few areas dedicated to kitesurfing – this extreme sport has been described as a cross, between wakeboarding and paragliding, and in 2005 the Kitesurf World Cup was hosted in the Sardinian resort of Aglientu. Another popular activity on a holiday to Sardinia is scuba diving – there are reported to be as many as two hundred caves along the Sardinian coastline, some of which can only be accessed through underwater chasms. As a result there are a number of secret chambers, such as the magnificent ‘Neptune’s Grotto’, which are popular destinations for divers.

Then there’s the distinctive Sardinian cuisine, which includes specialities such as fresh, grilled fish, spicy sausages and rich vegetable stews. Pop in to one of the traditional restaurants that line the streets of most Sardinian towns, and try some of these mouth-watering dishes for yourself.

One of the more famous archaeological sites on the island of Sardinia is at Su Nuraxi; declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1997, this fascinating burial site, or ‘nuraghe’, features at its centre a three-story tower that is believed to date back as early as the 16th century BC. Elsewhere during your holiday to Sardinia, you will have the chance to see ancient churches, medieval fortifications and Roman amphitheatres. Alternatively, there are plenty of options to take a boat trip from Sardinia, and visit some of the other nearby Mediterranean islands; Corsica, the Italian Peninsula, Sicily, Tunisia and the Spanish Balearic Islands are all within reach, and make great options for a day trip or excursion.
