Pirates of the Algarve
In 1679 the port of Olhao needed to build itself a fort to protect the villagers from pirates, today it opens its arms to visitors and holidaymakers. The latter may be a little less dramatic but this large fishing port has plenty of other things on offer. You won’t find a beach in the immediate area but the nearby Ilha da Culatra has stunning sand and crystal clear water. From the outskirts the town shows a number of different identities. Approaching from the port makes Olhao appear quite industrial while the dock side is far more open and lush with colour. Whichever angle you look at Olhao from it always has an excited buzz about it. The challenge is trying to see every different part of it!
Bargain at the markets
In central Olhao stand two tall market buildings. In here you’ll find a rainbow array of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as seafood caught from the Olhao waters that very morning. Exploring the market is the best way to get an idea and sample of the local delicacies and see what you can expect to find in the neighbourhood restaurants. If you decide to buy anything from the stalls get your best bartering voice on because there is always a bargain that can be negotiated. Sneak between the two buildings and you can follow a shortcut into the centre of town. The buildings here are elegant and intricately decorated with wrought iron; it’s a stark contrast to the modern port. The carefully paved streets lead to quirky jazz cafes and boutique shops where you can chill out with a drink or shop ‘til you drop. The Church of Nossa Senhora de Rosario stands proudly in the centre square and is a remarkable piece of architecture. For other holidays in the sun, check out holidays to Tavira
