Morocco for your to discover
Rabat is the third largest city in the Kingdom of Morocco, and a popular destination amongst holidaymakers worldwide. Combining culture, history and some stunning beaches, it’s the perfect destination for families, beach fanatics, and culture lovers alike.
Fortified Place
The city of Rabat takes its name from the Arabic term ‘ar-Raba?’, literally meaning ‘Fortified Place’. Located at the mouth of the river Bou Regreg, Rabat commands an excellent strategic position, and has long been an influential and powerful city. Rabat enjoys a beautiful stretch of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean, and boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Morocco.
There are a number of fascinating cultural attractions to see during a holiday to Rabat; the Mausoleum of Mohammed V is a great place to start, a dramatically elegant tribute to one of the city’s past rulers. The University that takes its name from Mohammed V is also worth checking out, boasting some truly impressive architectural flourishes. Then there is the historic Hassan Tower, and the tranquil beauty of the ancient Chellah necropolis – a burial site that dates back as far as the Roman period.
The arts are well catered for here, and during a holiday in Rabat you will have the option of visiting a good range of galleries and performance venues. L'appartement 22 for example is a modern space dedicated to visual arts, while the Theatre Mohamed V is a great stage venue in the city centre, which puts on a wide variety of traditional acts – in addition to modern performing arts shows, and colourful stage spectaculars. There is also a good selection of museums on offer, including the fascinating Archaeological Museum of Rabat.
One great option for a day out during your holiday in Rabat would be to cross the river Bou Regreg, and pay a visit to the small community known as Salé. This modest town enjoys a laidback pace of life, and the rural setting might make a welcome from the noise and chaos that you can sometimes experience in the city of Rabat itself.
