Ouarzazate is the capital city of the Ouarzazate Province, located in southern central Morocco. It can be found at an elevation of 1160m, situated on its own plateau in the foothills of the mighty High Atlas Mountains.
This unique destination represents an oasis of culture, overlooking the sprawling, barren beauty of the Sahara Desert. On a holiday in Ouarzazate you’ll be able to take advantage of some superb home comforts, including exceptional cuisine, warm hospitality and a range of fascinating cultural attractions. Families are well catered for here, and the surrounding landscape is bound to appeal to anyone who appreciates nature at its most rugged.
Ouarzazate is sometimes referred to as the ‘Door to the Desert’. From here a barren desert sprawls for miles to the south, and the site has long been an important refuge amidst the inhospitable terrain of this area. For a long time it has been a home to the Berber people, who have left their mark behind in much of the city’s architecture.
When you arrive in Ouarzazate, head straight for the main street, Avenue Muhammed V. This is where you’ll find the majority of Ouarzazate’s shops, bars and restaurants, and it will really give you a taste of the local culture. Stop off to try the fabulous local cuisine, or shop for an unusual souvenir in one of the numerous covered markets. Holidays in Ouarzazate are different from many of the other destinations in Morocco, as this relatively small town features a much more relaxed atmosphere than you might expect from Morocco. It is no coincidence that the name ‘Ouarzazate’ comes from a Berber phrase, meaning ‘without confusion’.
There are some great ideas for day trips in the area surrounding the city; during a holiday in Ouarzazate, you’ll be able to take a guided tour into the desert, or visit the beautiful Draa Valley. Alternatively you can check out the nearby fortified village of Ait Benhaddou. This ancient site makes for an incredibly beautiful excursion, and the village has recently been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Not far from here, it is also possible to visit the tranquil, palm-lined oasis town of Zagora. Check out other holidays to Casablanca and holidays to Fez
