A visit to Marrakech - a must see

Marrakech is the capital of Morocco, and located in the mid-southwest of the country. Nestling in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, this large city offers a wide range of tourist attractions and fascinating cultural distractions.

Marrakech Holidays

Marrakech is sometimes known as the ‘Red City’, and this dazzling imperial capital is the most important city in Morocco’s history. The city consists of an old fortified citadel -the Medina, as well as a thriving modern city - known as ‘Gueliz’.

One of the main attractions on a holiday to Marrakech is the market at Djemaa el Fna. This bustling market square is built on the site of an ancient mosque, and is reckoned to be not only the largest traditional market -or souk in Morocco, but also one of the busiest market squares in the world. Here you’ll find a heady blend of storytellers, fakirs, mystics, snake charmers, acrobats and other street performers, as well as stalls that sell all manner of goods. From fine fabrics to livestock, spices to local handicrafts; you certainly won’t find it hard to pick up an unusual souvenir during a holiday in Marrakech! Later in the evening the food wagons arrive in convoy, and the square turns into one vast, open-air restaurant. Try local specialities such as deep fried eel, hearty stews served in a tagine, or the delicious almond sweets known as amlou.

From Marrakech, you will have plenty of options for a day out or excursion. Trains run from here to the fascinating city of Casablanca for example, where visitors can enjoy a rich cultural heritage, and some truly outstanding scenery. Other nearby attractions include the picturesque valley of the Ourika River, which can be found high up in the Atlas Mountains. Alternatively, head south towards the Sahara Desert. You can take a camel tour if you want, and visit such sights as the Draa River, the Waterfalls of Beni Mellal and the beautiful town of Essaouira.

A holiday in Marrakech will also bring you close to some of the best beaches in Morocco – along this Atlantic coastline, you will be able to find countless golden beaches, providing the perfect conditions for swimming and sunbathing. Not only that, but there is a good range of water sports on offer in the area around Marrakech, which range from scuba diving to jet skiing… and plenty more besides.
