One of the most picturesque spots in the whole of the Mediterranean, the Amalfi Coast is something of a celebrity in southern Italy. With huge numbers of fans and its picture always in the glossy magazines, it is a playground for the rich and famous and a fabulous Italian holiday destination for all budgets. Amalfi is the jewel in its crown. Set on dramatic cliff tops, it overlooks the gorgeous blue sea, and being close to its Amalfi Coast neighbours makes it a good base for travelling. Amalfi promises great weather, delicious food and a traditionally Italian way of life.
Enjoy pizzas in piazzas on holidays to Amalfi
A far cry from the packed, touristy resorts you’ll find everywhere in the Med, Amalfi feels like a secret, preserved corner of Italy. Wander through the town and you’ll pass courtyards, narrow alleys and whitewashed villas. Culture vultures will love the traditional feel to the town. The sights are incredible; with tiny, ancient churches and Roman architecture. The town isn’t all quiet, though; the lively town centre is full of boutiques, piazzas and lovely places for food and drink.
The little local restaurants are the best place to stop for a slap up meal. The Italian cuisine is famous and the region has fantastic mozzarella, fresh tomatoes and lemons from the local groves. Being so close to Naples, you will of course find amazing pizzas. Got a sweet tooth? Try the Colceria dell’Antico Portico, a patisserie that specialises in delicious traditional desserts. Amalfi has plenty of cafés dotted around that are great for a cool drink in the sunshine. Bag a spot by the coast for a chilled evening watching the sun go down over the ocean.
Amalfi has a little pebble beach that is perfect for a sunny afternoon walk, but if you’re hoping for a more comfy sunbathing spot, then your best bet is to plan a day trip and visit one of the neighbouring towns. Don’t worry – the coast is so compact that it’s quick and easy to get around. The town of Maiori, boasting the best beaches on the coast, is only a 10 minute drive away. A drive along the beautiful coast is itself a real treat. Maiori has idyllic soft sand, blue seas and a classic Italian seafront packed with bars, pizza parlours and ice cream cafés.
