Fira the capital of Santorini

Fira is the capital of the Greek island of Santorini, and is located on the western end of the island. This stylised, traditional town features a broad range of shops, bars and restaurants, as well as providing a fascinating glimpse into the history and heritage of Santorini. Holidays to Fira combine a cultural, family-friendly town, with a lively nightlife, and access to some truly breath taking beaches.

Fira holidays with lastminute.com

Fira is situated high up on a mountainside, where its precarious-looking rows of whitewashed houses enjoy fantastic views out over the Aegean Sea. Despite the town’s growing popularity as a holiday destination, Fira has managed to loose none of its traditional charm; its narrow, winding streets and colourful markets keep the spirit of rural Greece alive.

Although parts of Fira were damaged during the severe earthquake of 1956, a good number of the original 18th century buildings were saved. Some of the more remarkable buildings include the Agios Minas church, the monastery of Panagia ton Dominikanidon and the breathtaking Cathedral of Christ.

You’ll find a good selection of museums dotted around the town as well, such as the Megaron Gyzi Museum. The exhibitions here chart the damage caused by the 1956 earthquake, and show photos of Fira before and after the event. Alternatively, you could visit the archaeological museum, which features a number of items retrieved from the excavation of the ancient Minoan settlement of Akrotiri.

During a holiday to Fira you’ll also be able to visit the scenic little harbour, located at the bottom of the cliff. A cable car runs from top to bottom, or alternatively you could travel the traditional way, on donkey back. The harbour at the bottom is a beautiful place to stop for a picnic, and the more energetic walkers might enjoy climbing the 800 steep steps, if only for the view!

While Fira itself has no beach, you’re never far from one on the island of Santorini. Head down to towns such as Monolithos or Perissa on a day out, and you’ll be able to enjoy some of the island’s famous black sand. The Aegean waters are great for swimming in, and the shallow waters make this a safe destination for families with young children. Alternatively you might like to try out one of the exciting water sports on offer on Santorini, which range from jet skiing to scuba diving!
