Kotu Holidays

Escape the UK winter and treat yourself to a holiday to Kotu, a resort located on a popular stretch of the Gambian coastline. With warm temperatures all year round, beautiful sandy beaches all along this stretch of coast, plus a huge amount of wildlife in nearby nature reserves, a holiday to Kotu should keep the whole family happy. November to February, during the dry season, is the best time to go to Gambia, when the weather is cooler and drier. Temperatures during the wet season in the summer months reach a sweltering 30C.

Discover beaches and birds on a Kotu holiday

The wide sandy beach of Kotu is backed by palm trees and is idyllic, as are the other beaches along this stretch of coastline starting with Kotu in the south and heading north to Cape Point.

There are numerous resorts packed along this part of the Gambian coastline, but Kotu is unique due to the Kotu stream. Because of the stream the area is very fertile and is home to a wide variety of birds. You can bird watch from the bridge over the stream and you may catch sight of kingfishers and birds of prey. Learn more about the birds from one of the knowledgeable guides that are often on hand.

Gambia’s capital city, Banjul is not far away, so drag yourself off the beach and explore Banjul’s vibrant markets and admire its old colonial buildings. Kotu has its own craft market too where you can purchase beautiful woodcarvings to take home as a souvenir.

Hire a bicycle and explore the surrounding area. Stick to the coastline to see the neighbouring resorts of Kololi, Fajara and Bakau or head inland to discover the Gambian countryside. There are many nature reserves within the area such as Bijilo National Park, Tanji Bird Reserve, Salagi Forest Park and Abuko Nature Reserve.

Although you can find local Gambian cuisine in some of the restaurants in Kotu, the food definitely has an international flavour. Tuck into curry at the Jewel of India or try a restaurant with an Italian, Moroccan or even British menu.
