Bakau Holidays
The sunny seaside town of Bakau lies on the Atlantic coast of Gambia, the smallest country in Africa. It’s known for its laid-back charm, spotless sandy beaches and gorgeous botanical gardens. If you’re looking for a beach holiday this summer, you’ll find something a little exotic in this friendly little country. With the mercury staying around the 30C mark for most of the year, the weather certainly won’t disappoint.
Experience a taste of the exotic with a holiday to Bakau
Bakau is divided into the beach at Cape Point and the Old and New Town. If you want to head straight to the sand and sea, make a beeline for Cape Point. Situated right at the southern tip of the country, the soft white beach nestles around the mouth of the beautiful River Gambia. The are enough amenities to keep everyone happy – beach bars and cafés that are great for lunch and a cold drink, as well as a handful of good restaurants. The palm trees and relaxing atmosphere are idyllic, and despite being popular with visitors, Cape Point manages to hang onto the traditional sense of small-town Gambia with the friendly locals and village-like feel. The beach is also a great place for water sports, once you’ve had your fill of sunbathing. Windsurfing and snorkelling are favourites.
Along the main road and back to the Old and New Town is a busy and lively African experience, packed with bars and markets well worth a visit. You can pick up some local handmade arts and crafts as souvenirs of your holiday to Bakau, and get stuck into some haggling at the fruit and veg markets. The fish markets are great for picking up the catch of the day, with prawns being a local specialty. After a delicious fresh lunch, make sure you visit the lush botanical gardens that Gambia is famous for. The gardens are tropical and fragrant, and are a beautiful place for an afternoon stroll. In the evenings, head to Sait Matty Road to check out the local entertainment and stop at a bar. The nightlife is a pretty chilled affair, but nearby Kololi is a within easy travelling distance and offers a great vibrant nightlife scene, including a casino.
Gambia’s size means that it is easy to travel around between towns and plan a few excursions on your holiday to Bakau. Take a boat trip on the River Gambia to spot some crocodiles - from a safe distance! Gambia’s capital Banjul is also close by, and it a rewarding visit being jam-packed with monuments of African culture with plenty of places to visit.
