Everybody’s welcome!
Despite its reputation as the holiday destination of choice for the rich and famous, St. James remains a warm and welcoming holiday destination for anyone and everyone. The town's rich history- it was here that British settlers first landed in Barbados in 1625- make it an excellent place to visit if you are interested in the history of Barbados itself. Historical attractions such as the St. James Parish Church and the Portvale Sugar Factory offer an insight into the history of the town and the island, while the Holetown Festival, held in February, celebrates the arrival of the first settlers in Barbados and includes a street parade, local exhibits and, of course, endless music and dancing. Outside of cultural pursuits, St. James offers wide variety of sporting and other activities, from golf, polo and tennis to the opportunity to swim with turtles at the protected Turtle colony living in the bay. If you want to add a little luxury to your own holiday, make the most of the excellent spa facilities available in the town, or take a private cruise around the bay.
By name, and nature, the 'Gold Coast' of Barbados boasts some of the island's finest beaches. St. James itself is conveniently situated at the centre of one of Barbados's most impressive beaches, Paynes Bay. Also close by are the Good Shepherd and Sandy Lane beaches. All boast white sand, excellent facilities and safe swimming for all the family.
The restaurant scene in St. James is second to none. From traditional Bajan restaurants to Michelin starred Mediterranean cuisine, you could eat out for a month and still have places to visit. As ever, it is always worth sampling the local delicacies- in this case, make sure to try the ever popular Bajan fish cakes or, if you have a sweet tooth, visit a local sweet shop and try local candies ranging from guava cheese and tamarind balls to chocolate fudge and peanut brittle. Whatever you fancy, and whenever, you can be sure that you'll find it somewhere in St. James.
Night life in St. James is low-key but luxurious. This is not a party-town, rather a place to enjoy a leisurely nightcap and a turn on the dance floor as the sun sets over the bay. There are a variety of bars, however, and if you are looking for something a little more informal, you will find it among the older, but still charming, bars and cafés of Holetown, the commercial town-centre.
