Discover English Harbour

The English Harbour resort of Antigua, on the south coast of the island, is best known for its historic Nelson’s Dockyard which is one of the main attractions on Antigua. With picturesque beaches, tropical forest, exotic marine life and a maritime history, holidays in English Harbour have plenty to offer families and couples after a magical break in the Caribbean.

Things to see and do in English Harbour

Nelson’s Dockyard National Park was a base for the English navy in the 18th century and is named after Admiral Horatio Nelson. It is now completely restored, and is the only working Georgian dockyard in the world. Scattered with historical buildings and still used as a world-class marina, English Harbour is a vibrant centre for sailing and yachting. There are several nature trails around the park where you can enjoy beautiful views of the Falmouth and English harbours and explore the local flora and fauna.

The impressive rock formations of the Pillars of Hercules stand at the entrance to Freeman’s Bay and English Harbour. You can walk to them easily, but they are best viewed from a boat trip on the sea. Climb to Shirley Heights, the old fortifications of the harbour’s colonial observation point, and look out across the Caribbean Sea. Nearby you’ll find Dow’s Hill Interpretation Centre where you can learn about Antigua’s history, and on Sundays the vista hosts a barbeque with a great atmosphere, with live reggae and steel drum music.

Galleon Beach is a quarter mile stretch of golden sand, with warm blue waters and a reef full of colourful marine life. Take part in kayaking and windsurfing, or just chill out. Pigeon’s Point beach is a five minute drive from English Harbour and with its clear, calm waters it’s a perfect spot for snorkelling. Five minutes further down the road you’ll find the secret Windward Beach which is breezy but secluded and quiet. Though not the best place for swimming due to a rocky shoreline, it’s perfect for sunbathing. Take your own picnic and relax on the soft white sand.

The dockyard and nearby Falmouth Harbour are the centre of the best restaurants on the southeast coast of Antigua, with a restaurant at Shirley Heights that offers fantastic views. You can enjoy a variety of different cuisines and delicious seafood, often with a distinct Caribbean flavour. Nightlife in English Harbour is fairly laid back, though there are casinos and live music bars to enjoy in the evening. As well as cocktails and beers to drink, be sure to try some famous Antiguan rum! For other great holidays in the livelier nightlife areas check out holidays to Dickenson Bay
